As we nestle into the heart of wedding season, my team and I decided that putting out “Pledge to Love You” — the second song from my Spirit of Oya album — would be a great idea. And this got me thinking about this particular song and what inspired me to write it.
When other people hear this song, they think of a beautiful wedding song, one that commemorates the loving commitment they make to the man or woman of their dreams. While that is definitely a big part of what was in my heart when I was writing the song, there is so much more behind it!
Taking a “pledge to love you” is not just about loving someone ELSE the way they deserve; it is also about loving YOU the way you deserve. There are so many people out there looking for love and doing things for other people that often forget to fulfill their own needs. But how can you really love someone else, be loyal and commit to someone else if you truly do not appreciate and take care of yourself first?
Ever since I was a little girl, I have fantasized about writing a song that people could get married to, and knowing that “Pledge to Love You” is that song for so many makes me feel amazing, especially when I am singing it for couples around the nation on their special day. But this song is also about making a commitment to yourself, honoring your deepest desires, holding onto your dreams and fulfilling your goals.
When I think about my song, I think about the importance of gazing at yourself in the mirror, looking into your own eyes and vowing to fulfill your life’s purpose — living this gift of life in the fullest way possible. Because, when you really connect to your spirit and follow through, there is nothing you can’t do. And when you are in that magnificent place, you attract magnificence in your career and in your relationships. Who doesn’t want that?
I know from personal experience that it is not easy to make commitments and follow through, but remember — this is YOUR life! And in honor of YOU, I want you to do something for me: Look at yourself in the mirror and make a promise to yourself about what you truly want your life to be.
Do you want to go back to school?
Do you want to create something beautiful that comes from your soul?
Is it time to let go of the fear and put your all into launching a successful business?
Are you in need of a personal organizer to help you come clean, clear the clutter and make your home back into a peaceful sanctuary?
Do you want to lose the weight you’ve been saying you would shed for months … or years?
Do you really want to create peace in your life and space and know that you just need the support of a counselor or life coach to find emotional support?
Are you looking for a community that will help support you through addictions — food, drugs, alcohol or otherwise — that may be killing you or at least taking away a productive life?
Going out into the world once you have committed to yourself can be scary. You might be afraid you will not succeed, and sometimes you won’t. You still have to work towards what you want, and sometimes that means falling down, dusting yourself off and getting back up again.
Making a “pledge to love you” is about connecting with your spirit daily and knowing what you want out of life. It’s about really living out your purpose, living from your heart and not letting yourself down.
If you’re worried about what anyone else might say about you — whether you falter OR succeed — don’t! People will always have opinions, but they are not in charge of your life. Others will have their own fears that they try to project on you. They might say, “You can’t do it,” but who are they to tell you what you can or cannot do?
I am ever inspired by those who have fought against great odds. I delight in stories about individuals who came out of rough neighborhoods or unsupportive families, who did not have arms, legs, vision or hearing, or who were told they were too old or too young to accomplish something … but did it anyway! It is these hopeful stories that make me say, “To heckeroo with what ANYONE has to say about you! Find your dream and go for it!”
I sincerely want you to wake up every morning singing, “I love my life! I love me!” Wouldn’t that be a good feeling? And feeling this love for yourself inside and out will make your love for others so much deeper.
So, come on … go for it! Today is the day. Stop talking about loving yourself and making your life better and just do it. Make a pledge to love YOU and start taking the action steps — even if they are just baby steps — to live your life and the life that you love living.
Now, in honor of beautiful and shining you, please take a listen to “Pledge to Love You”! Then let me know exactly how you are pledging to love yourself and others … and about the great things you see others doing who are loving themselves and being a great service to the world. I really want to hear from you!
