Here’s an idea I try my best to live by: It’s not about what you do, but why you do it.
And I’ve been thinking about this concept a lot as I offer up my latest song “Pledge to Love You” and consider how it applies to our careers and our life’s work. If your “dream job” comes from the heart and also embodies your life’s purpose, you will be fulfilled and feel gratified while doing this job.
When you think about your own “dream job,” consider this: Would you do it even if you did not get paid for it? Hopefully, the answer is a resounding “yes”! Still, you also need to understand your worth as you pursue this work you are moved and compelled to do and charge appropriately for your time and energy. However, when you are getting paid to do what you love and prospering from your dream, it is a win-win situation!
Of course, whether you go through with living from the heart is another story. Let me tell you my own personal story: As I was figuring out my own life’s purpose, I remember watching great people sing on stage, compelling speakers speak and reading books that truly moved me. And as I soaked in all these experiences, I realized they did not just move me: They compelled me to do the work I do today. These performers, speakers, writers and artists were mentors and light bearers showing me the way — igniting what was already inside me, aching to get out.
As a young girl, I had to contain myself while watching a talented singer, because I wanted to join in and sing so badly! After a concert, I would run home, write songs and sing, using my stuffed animals as my audience. I would also speak out loud and hear myself speak to people with words of encouragement, inspiration and motivation.
Why did I do all this? I did this for the love of what it was and for the people I knew I could bring love, light, joy and peace. I wanted them to connect with the love inside them.
In those early days, obviously, my teddy bear could not pay me. My yellow bunny rabbit with the roller skates couldn’t buy a ticket to hear me sing my heart out. And my monkey and pony friends definitely could not afford to attend the little Spirit of Oya summit either! So in the beginning, I did these things out of joy — because they were fun.
Those days of singing on the porch and speaking to my toys have now turned into days of singing and speaking to intimate rooms brimming with people cheering, clapping, singing and dancing along with me. Singing my own wedding love song “Pledge to Love You” for a bride walking down the aisle or for a couple’s first dance was a dream I had, and now it has happened! So has performing a concert in front of a sold-out crowd!
See? Dreams do come true!
That joyful, enthusiastic little girl I was still shows up from time to time, and I feel a little tingle inside. My eyes mist up, because I feel so good that I have made her dream come true. I did not forget her and why she came into this world as I built my adult life. As I am doing my work, I often feel warmth in my heart that can be nothing else other than my soul jumping for joy within the confines of my body, my expansive spirit reverberating and vibrating with joy.
To be honest, sometimes it’s hard for me to contain myself! I explode with giggles of joy, or feel happy tears welling up, and I rush to grab a Kleenex to keep from muddling up my makeup.
It just feels so good to live my dream.
There is so much more I want to do on this earth, but the fact is, I am in the midst of making all of it happen RIGHT NOW. My dream may be much bigger than where I am now, but I am still living it from deep within my heart.
And guess what? This is what I call success. I am not a millionaire (well, not yet anyway!). But I am doing well with what I love, and I feel very rich and full.
Let me be clear: I am not sharing these thoughts with you to boast; I just want to let you know what is possible for your own life. If I can do it, you can do it too!
That is why I am working on my book about living your dream through the 5 Star Points … and also why I wrote the song “Pledge to Love You.” Because, it’s all about taking that pledge to love yourself and going for it, doing what you were put here to do!
I’m not going to lie: It’s not always easy! But it is so worth it. And frankly, I would much rather have trials while doing what I love than tribulations while doing what I despise, working a job year after year that drains my spirit.
So, I ask you to please take the pledge TODAY: “Pledge to Love You”! Talk to yourself, look at yourself, write to yourself about your dreams. You can even talk to someone else who is a real, unbiased and loving sounding board, someone who believes in truly living life!
You can create a plan that is going to allow you to live from your heart. You just have to believe and then take the serious action steps to manifest your dreams.
Do you believe you are worth it? I KNOW you are! Take the #PledgetoLoveYou … and go for it! And check out my song; I hope it inspires you!
